As a photographer it all started as a teenager, frustrated that my World Scout Jamboree pictures did not come even close to match the fantastic experience I had had. I set out to do better on the next one in Chile. Got my own camera, improved my skills for two years prior to embarking on a Jamboree again. This time I came back with a great set of images that opened new photographic doors.
Fresh off the Jamboree I rolled into the Dutch National Scout office as one of their official photographers. An amazing ~20-year ride followed during which I visited countless national and international events. The absolute highlight was being a part of the team of official photographers during the centennial Jamboree in the UK in 2007. My old website still captures the many events I’ve been to.
In the years that followed the UK Jamboree my focus slowly shifted away from scouting towards nature and landscapes, as I moved from The Netherlands to the Arctic Circle. Finland opened up many new possibilities which I started exploring together with my friend and nature photographer Johan van der Wielen, by organizing multi-day photography workshops through Taiga Travel.
During these workshops we always advise our customers to find a local spot that they can easily access when the light is perfect. This allows capturing the most amazing shots. After realizing this and also realizing that many visit the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights I decided to challenge myself:
go out and capture the Northern Lights!
This challenge transformed itself into a new passion of mine. It allows me to find new locations, go explore, read forecasts and use my degree in Applied Physics simultaneously, all to understand and capture this fantastic natural phenomenon.
